Shalom,
Thank you for expressing an interest in joining Beth Israel Congregation, the center of Jewish life in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina since 1912. We have a mix of families who have been members for three or more generations and others who have recently moved here. Many congregants live in Florence while others live in surrounding towns. Some of us grew up in Reform Temples, some come from more traditional backgrounds, while some are new to Judaism. Interfaith couples are welcomed and actively participate in the life of the congregation.
Shabbat services are held every Friday night, led by Rabbi Sherman or a lay leader. After services, an Oneg Shabbat is held in our Social Hall. Once a month we have a pot luck dinner before services, in addition to the Oneg Shabbat after services. Our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services are inspirational and include a Break-the-Fast in the Social Hall. We also hold a large congregational Passover Seder.
Our Religious School includes preschool through Confirmation classes. Rabbi Sherman takes an active role along with our experienced teachers in preparing our students for life as Jews.
Beth Israel Congregation becomes an extended family for its members. We celebrate simchas, life cycle events, and all Jewish holidays together. We lean on one another when we share in our grief.
B’shalom,
Rabbi Aaron Sherman
