Rabbi Aaron Sherman

Rabbi Aaron Sherman

Rabbi Aaron Sherman has served Beth Israel Congregation since 2011. For a dozen years, Rabbi Sherman partnered with Rabbi Leah Doberne-Schor and they alternated serving our congregation for weekly Sabbath and holiday services. Now, Rabbi Sherman serves as our sole part time rabbi and travels to Florence two to three times a month.

Rabbi Sherman grew up in Tulsa, OK. He graduated from Brown University in 1992. He was ordained at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute for Judaism in 2000 and as a rabbinic student, he served small congregations throughout the south. As a fulltime rabbi, he served congregations in New York, Massachusetts, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

At present, Rabbi Sherman lives in Charleston, SC where his wife, Rabbi Stephanie Alexander, is the head rabbi at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. They have one son, Eli, who is a high school student. When in Charleston, Rabbi Sherman works part time at Jewish Family Services where he serves as a chaplain for the general Jewish community of Charleston. He loves watching sports, especially college and professional basketball, and roots for both the Clemson Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks. When he has time to relax, he enjoys reading murder mysteries and thrillers.

“I am pleased that Beth Israel has congregants of all ages. I have had the pleasure of seeing my first students who became B’nai Mitzvah and then were confirmed with me go on to college. We also have several aging seniors with whom I enjoy visiting and learning about their life history.”
